Overview

H2 receptor antagonists reduce stomach acid production by blocking histamine H2 receptors on parietal cells. They are used for heartburn, GERD, and peptic ulcers.

How do h2 receptor antagonists work?

These drugs competitively block histamine H2 receptors on the basolateral membrane of gastric parietal cells, reducing basal and stimulated acid secretion by decreasing cyclic AMP-mediated proton pump activation.
